The station identification (SID) is constructed as follows:
    Note 1: All report identifiers are left justified with blank trailing characters if less than eight characters are used.
    Note 2: All alphabetic characters are upper-case unless otherwise noted.
   - For fixed land rawinsonde or PIBAL reports in Table A entry ADPUPA; fixed surface land synoptic reports in Table A entry ADPSFC; wind profiler reports from the U.S. NOAA Profiler Network, or wind profiler reports from Japan, or wind profiler reports originating from PIBAL bulletins in Table A entry PROFLR; or RASS reports from the U.S. NOAA Profiler Network in Table A entry RASSDA:  A five numeric character ID, where characters one and two contain the WMO block number and characters three through five contain the WMO station number.

or AMDAR aircraft reports (all types incl. E-AMDAR and Canadian AMDAR) in Table A entry AIRCFT: An alphanumeric ID, ranging from one to eight characters, constructed from the aircraft registration (tail) number (MDCRS-ACARS and AMDAR tail numbers are encrypted).  MCDRS-ACARS aircraft flight numbers are stored in mnemonic ACID.
          -  MDCRS include data from American, Continental, Delta, FedEx, Northwest, Southwest, United and UPS airlines.
          - For AMDAR reports, the first several characters in the ID identify the area the aircraft is from: AFZ is South Africa, AU is Australia, B- at one time was China (don't see this anymore),
CNJCA is Canada, EU is Europe, HK is Hong Kong, JP is Japan, MK at one time was Air Mauritius (don't see this anymore) and NZL is New Zealand.  It is believed that CNF is now China, and three other ids are not known at this time: SG, VA and BA.
    - For AIREP aircraft reports in Table A entry AIRCFT, or AFWA MCDRS-ACARS aircraft reports in Table A entry AIRCAR: An alphanumeric ID, ranging from one to eight characters, constructed from the aircraft flight number.
    - For TAMDAR(MADIS) aircraft in Table A entry AIRCFT: An eight character manufactured ID, where characters one through four are numeric and always zeroes (0000) and characters five through eight are numeric (and usually character five is 9) .  This form of the id is also stored in mnemonic ACID (although it is not the aircraft flight number).
    - For PIREP aircraft reports in Table A entry AIRCFT: A six character manufactured ID, where character one is P, numeric characters two through five are a unique index count and character six is P.
    - For satellite wind reports in Table A entry SATWND: The report ID is constructed in the data dumping process (see Satellite Historical Documentation, Section II on NESDIS Satellite Wind Data, Section V on EUMETSAT Satellite Wind DataSection VI on Japanese Satellite Wind Data or Section VII on Indian Satellite Wind Data).
    - For Multi-Agency wind profiler and acoustic sounder (SODAR) reports in Table A entry PROFLR, or Multi-Agency RASS reports in Table A entry RASSDA: A five character alphabetic ID associated with the report in the incoming LDM feed from NOAA/ESRL/GSD-MADIS.  These are created at GSD  and usually consist of a 3 character id followed by a 2 character state code.
    - For NEXRAD Vertical Azimuth Display (VAD) wind reports in Table A entry VADWND:  A seven character ID, where numeric characters one through four contain the product source identifier and alphabetic characters five through seven contain the radar coded message identifier.  Both the product source identifier and the radar coded message identifier are found in the raw bulletin.
    - For NESDIS polar-orbiting satellite retrieval, sounding and radiance reports in Table A entry SATEMP: The report ID is constructed in the PREPBUFR processing (see Satellite Historical Documentation, Section I on NESDIS POES Retrieval/Sounding/Radiance Data).
    - For surface land METAR reports in Table A entry ADPSFC: A four character ID (usually alphabetic), constructed from the raw METAR bulletin.  Character one identifies the country/region as follows:
        A - Tropical Pacific islands {including New Guinea (AY--)}
        B - Greenland (BG--) and Iceland (BI--)
        C - Canada

    - For surface mesonet reports in Table A entry MSONET: Three to five alphanumeric characters.  In addition,  character eight is set to either: " " (blank) if the reported station pressure is non-missing (best quality); "a" if the reported station pressure is missing and the reported altimeter setting is non-missing, meaning the station pressure is generated from the altimeter setting and the reported elevation (next best quality); or "x" if the reported station pressure and reported altimeter setting are both missing, meaning the station pressure is generated via the U.S. Standard Atmosphere sea-level pressure (1013.25 mb) and the reported temperature and elevation (least best quality).  (Note: sea-level pressure is always missing in the mesonet reports.)
    - For surface marine ship reports in Table A entry SFCSHP: An alphanumeric character ID, ranging from four to eight characters, constructed from the ship call sign.  Reports with missing ship call sign get report id and ship call sign set to SHIP.
    - For surface marine drifting buoy or surface marine fixed buoy reports in Table A entry SFCSHP: A five numeric character ID, constructed from the buoy/platform identifier.
    - For surface marine C-MAN platform reports in Table A entry SFCSHP: Four alphabetic characters followed by one numeric character, constructed from the stationary buoy platform identifier.
    - For surface marine tide gauge reports in Table A entry SFCSHP: A five character ID, where alphabetic characters one and two contain the U.S. state post office ID and numeric characters three through five contain an index count unique to each state.  The ID is read from the NCEP tide gauge dictionary.
    - For surface marine sea-level pressure bogus reports in Table A entry SFCBOG: A five character ID, where character one is P and numeric characters two through five contain a unique index count.
    - For SSM/I brightness temperature, SSM/I operational derived product or SSM/I NeuralNet 3 derived product reports in Table A entry SPSSMI:  The report ID is constructed in the reprocessing of the data dump (see Satellite Historical Documentation, Section IV on DMSP SSM/I Data).
    - For synthetic tropical cyclone bogus wind reports in Table A entry SYNDAT: An eight character ID, constructed by the PREPBUFR processing program SYNDAT_SYNDATA, where characters one and two are MA, numeric characters three and four define a unique tropical storm number (note that SYNDAT_SYNDATA can produce bogus reports for any number of tropical storms) and numeric characters five through eight are a unique index count for synthetic bogus reports generated in the vicinity of the particular tropical storm.
    - For ERS scatterometer wind reports in Table A entry ERS1DA: The report ID is constructed in the reprocessing of the data dump (see Satellite Historical Documentation, Section VIII on ERS Scatterometer Data).
    - For GOES low-resolution (5x5 FOV) or high-resolution (single FOV) sounding/radiance reports in Table A entry GOESND: The report ID is constructed in the data dumping process (see Satellite Historical Documentation, Section III on NESDIS GOES Satellite Retrieval/Sounding/Radiance Data).

The NESDIS Recursive Filter Function (RFFL) 
is a measure of quality for satellite-derived winds provided by NESDIS.  It can range from 1 to 100.  A value under 50 is considered bad.  Otherwise, the higher the number the better the quality of the generated wind vector.


Operator descriptors change the actual storage for REQV to scale 6 and bit width 18.
