Content of the Basic Weather Meteograms

These are real time meteograms produced by the Experimental Eta SREF. Here is a sample set of meteograms for Bellingham, Washington (727976) for the period beginning at 06Z on the 25th (the 25/06 at the bottom left) and ending at 00Z on the 28th (the final 6-hr increment beyond the 27/18 at the lower right corners).

VARIABLES FOUND ON THE BASIC WEATHER METEOGRAM PLOTS:

TRACE 1: Temperature - 2-meter value, degrees Fahrenheit; as with all traces, the solid, darker line represents the ensemble mean.

TRACE 2: Dew Point - 2-meter value, degrees Fahrenheit.

TRACE 3: Total Precipitation - inches. The 66-hour total for the ensemble mean is printed on the label line.

TRACE 4: Wind Direction - degrees, left axis. and Wind Speed - m/s, right axis. Differences in timing of fronts and wind shifts show up nicely on this plot. Note, however, that a subtle wind shift from 350 to 10 degrees can easily be misinterpreted as a signifcant wind change due to 0 and 360 being on opposite ends of the scale.

TRACE 5: Precipitable Water - millimeters. (Apologies for mismatches in units, but the plotting software will not permit inches for this field.)
