User Guide to Interpreting Data Dump Counts in Data Dump Status Files

There is considerable interest in documenting the amount of observational data obtained in the various data dump networks and the amount of observational data assimilated by the NCEP operational analyses. Some people are interested in counts of “report” counts [where a “report” is a unique entity in time and space, possibly containing a station identifier, but always containing one or more “levels” (replications) of observational parameters (i.e., wind, temperature, moisture, etc.)], while others want a count of each data element (“observation”) in a report (e.g., a single radiosonde report containing geopotential, wind, temperature and specific humidity on 88 levels would contribute 352 “observations” to an analysis). Each network (RUC, ETA, GFS, FNL, CDAS) data dump run at NCEP generates a status file in the appropriate /com directory. This file has two purposes:

     1) its very existence indicates that the data dumping process in the network is completed;

     2) it contains text entries indicating the types of data dumped (according to BUFR type and subtype), the time window over which each type was dumped, the geographical region over which each type was dumped, the number of “reports” for each type dumped, and the status (i.e., return code) for each type dumped. The purpose of this guide is to help users understand what the numbers in the dump count status file actually represent, especially with respect to the numbers of reports and observations that are actually assimilated by the analyses.
 

The status file from each dump run can be found in /com/NET/prod/MODEL.YYYYMMDD/RUN.tCCz.status.tmHH.bufr_d.

In this guide I will be using the FNL network dump status file from 00Z 27 March 2003 as an example. This file is listed in Appendix I.
 

In the avn, eta and fnl model dump runs, a data counting code runs which compares the counts for each data type (i.e., BUFR type/subtype) dumped in the current run against the average counts from the previous 30 days. This code generates an “updated” status file for the NCEP SDM which lists the current dump counts vs. the 30-day averages and highlights those data types for which the current dump count is either too high or too low based on a percent difference from the average. The updated status file also provides a description of each data type dumped (this is not done in the initial dump count status file). This file can be found in

/com/NET/prod/MODEL.YYYYMMDD/RUN.tCCz.updated.status.tm00.bufr_d (where NET =avnetafnlMODELNETYYYYMMDD is as before; RUN = eta for MODEL = eta, RUNgblav for MODEL = avn; RUNgdas1 for MODEL = fnl; and CC is as before). The FNL network dump updated status file for 00Z 27 March 2003 is listed in Appendix II. Examination of Appendix II shows that the dump counts on this day are reasonably close to the average.
 

Next, let’s discuss the dump counts as listed in the initial status file in Appendix I. It may be helpful to refer to the updated status file in Appendix II to understand more about the meaning of the various data types. First, it is important to understand that the counts listed in the first section of the initial status file refer to the number of BUFR message subsets dumped (recall that the dump jobs are dipping into the BUFR “tank” database in order to generate dump files which are also in BUFR). In most cases a subset can be equated with a “report” (as defined in the first paragraph), but this is not always the case. This guide will refer to BUFR subsets as reports.
 

The data dump report counts represent a superset of the number of reports and, breaking that down, the number of observations actually assimilated by the analysis Some data types are dumped for purposes other than assimilation (e.g., verification, testing, etc.) Other data types are assimilated, but possibly only after the data are reprocessed in some way (e.g., reports failing quality control checks are removed, reports over land are removed, reports are superobed, observations of a certain type on a report level are not used, etc.).
 

Let’s first examine those data types from the FNL dump status file in Appendix I with reports that are not assimilated by the GFS-SSI analysis (i.e., NO observation in these reports is used).
 
 

003.104 (BUFR type 003, subtype 104, dump mnemonic atovs)NESDIS ATOVS vertical soundings from the NOAA-15 and NOAA-16 (and soon NOAA-17) polar orbiting satellites

Each report contains NESDIS retrieved virtual temperature observations on up to 40 pre-set pressure levels (retrieved surface pressure on the bottom level) and NESDIS processed brightness temperature observations for 35 channels, plus other ancillary data.
 

001.006 (the only subtype in dump group mnemonic sfcbog): Mean sea-level pressure bogus (currently only over the South Pacific as part of the PAOBS network)

Each report contains a mean sea-level pressure observation.
 

005.012 (in dump group mnemonic satwnd): NESDIS satellite derived winds using visible imagery from the GOES -8 and GOES-10 geostationary satellites

005.021 (in dump group mnemonic satwnd): Indian Met Service satellite derived winds using infrared imagery from the INSAT geostationary satellite

005.022 (in dump group mnemonic satwnd): Indian Met Service satellite derived winds using visible imagery from the INSAT geostationary satellite

005.023 (in dump group mnemonic satwnd): Indian Met Service satellite derived winds using water vapor imagery from the INSAT geostationary satellite

Each report contains a wind vector observation on an assigned height level, plus other ancillary data.
 

021.041 (dump mnemonic geoimr): NESDIS clear sky processed imager brightness temperatures from the GOES-8 and GOES-10 geostationary satellites

Each report contains brightness temperature observations for 5 channels, plus other ancillary data.
 
 

Next, let’s examine those data types from the FNL dump status file in Appendix I with reports that are assimilated by the GFS-SSI analysis (or at least some observations in some reports are assimilated).
 

The following are non-satellite reports are on a single level:

- All state variable observations with passing quality marks are assimilated.

004.004 (the only subtype in dump group mnemonic aircar): MDCRS format aircraft data from ACARS reporting systems, processed by ARINC

Each report can contain a temperature, moisture and wind vector observation on a reported pressure-altitude, plus ancillary data.

- Temperature, wind speed and wind direction observations with passing quality marks are assimilated, moisture (only available for some carriers) is NOT assimilated.
 

004.005 (in dump group mnemonic adpupa): Flight-level reconnaissance reports

Each report can contain the standard meteorological state variable observations (temperature, moisture, wind), plus other ancillary data.

- All state variable observations with passing quality marks are assimilated.
 
 

Next are non-satellite reports on a multiple levels:

Each report can contain wind vector observations on up to 19 wind-by-height levels, plus other ancillary data.

Each report contains a wind vector observation on an assigned height level, plus other ancillary data.

- Wind speed and direction observations with passing quality marks are assimilated.
 

005.011 (in dump group mnemonic satwnd): NESDIS satellite derived winds using water vapor imagery from the GOES-8 and GOES-10 geostationary satellites

Each report contains a wind vector observation on an assigned height level, plus other ancillary data; reports are either clear sky (deep layer) or cloud top,

- Wind speed and direction observations with passing quality marks from ONLY cloud top reports are assimilated (so a good estimate is that only about 50% of the reports dumped are assimilated).
 

008.010 (dump mnemonic osbuv): NESDIS solar backscatter ultraviolet (SBUV) ozone retrievals

from the NOAA-11, NOAA-14, NOAA-16 and NOAA-17 polar orbiting satellites

Each report contains ozone concentration on 12 pressure layers between 1013 and 0.25 mb.

- The GFS-SSI assimilates ozone concentration from only NOAA-16, but on all twelve layers. It thins the data and rejects some in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 20% of the total number of ozone concentration observations dumped are assimilated.
 

003.001 (only subtype in dump group mnemonic goesnd): NESDIS soundings, retrievals, and radiances on a 5x5 field-of-view from the GOES-8 and GOES-10 geostationary satellites

Each report can contain NESDIS retrieved height, sensible temperature and moisture observations on up to 40 pre-set pressure levels plus a retrieved surface pressure level; NESDIS processed brightness temperature observations for 18 channels; retrievals of lifted index, cloud amount, cloud top pressure, cloud top temperature, skin temperature, and precipitable water in four sigma layers; plus other ancillary data.

- The GFS-SSI assimilates only brightness temperature observations and only on 12 channels for GOES- 08 and 15 channels for GOES-10. It also thins the data and rejects some in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 15% of the total number of brightness temperature observations dumped are assimilated.
 

021.021 (dump mnemonic 1bhrs2): NESDIS level 1B radiances from the HIRS-2 instrument on the NOAA-14 polar orbiting satellite

Each report can contain NESDIS 1B brightness temperature observations for 19 channels, plus other ancillary data.

- The GFS-SSI assimilates brightness temperature observations on only 14 channels. It also thins the data and rejects some in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 1% of the total number of brightness temperature observations dumped are assimilated.
 

021.022 (dump mnemonic 1bmsu): NESDIS level 1B radiances from the MSU instrument on the NOAA-14 polar orbiting satellite

Each report can contain NESDIS 1B brightness temperature observations for 4 channels, plus other ancillary data.

- The GFS-SSI assimilates brightness temperature observations on all 4 channels. However, it thins the data and rejects some in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 50% of the total number of brightness temperature observations dumped are assimilated.
 

021.023 (dump mnemonic 1bamua): NESDIS level 1B radiances from the AMSU-A

instrument on the NOAA-15, NOAA-16 and NOAA-17 polar orbiting satellites

Each report can contain NESDIS 1B brightness temperature observations for 15 channels, plus other ancillary data.

- The GFS-SSI assimilates brightness temperature observations for all three satellites on only 14 channels. It also thins the data and rejects some in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 10% of the total number of brightness temperature observations dumped are assimilated.
 

021.024 (dump mnemonic 1bamub): NESDIS level 1B radiances from the AMSU-B

instrument on the NOAA-15, NOAA-16 and NOAA-17 polar orbiting satellites

Each report can contain NESDIS 1B brightness temperature observations for 5 channels, plus other ancillary data.

- The GFS-SSI assimilates brightness temperature observations for all three satellites on all 5 channels. However, it thins the data and rejects some in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 0.3% of the total number of brightness temperature observations dumped are assimilated.
 

021.025 (dump mnemonic 1bhrs3): NESDIS level 1B radiances from the HIRS-3

instrument on the NOAA-15, NOAA-16 and NOAA-17 polar orbiting satellites

Each report can contain NESDIS 1B brightness temperature observations for 19 channels, plus other ancillary data.

- The GFS-SSI assimilates brightness temperature observations from only NOAA-16 and NOAA-17 and on only 14 channels. It also thins the data and rejects some in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 0.7% of the total number of brightness temperature observations dumped are assimilated.
 

012.013 (dump mnemonic trmm): NASA Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data from the

TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) instrument on the TRMM polar orbiting satellite

Each report can contain the following products: rain plus cloud water, precipitation plus cloud ice, total rain rate and convective rain rate.

- In the dump process, a program called BUFR_SUPERTMI runs in order to quality control and then superob all products onto 1 degree latitude/longitude grid boxes. About 99.9% of the reports dumped pass the quality control checks and are available for superobing. The number of superobed reports coming out of BUFR_SUPERTMI is listed further down in the status file. [See the number after

in Appendix I.] The superob compression is approximately 99.5% (or about 200 reports per superob). 

- The GFS-SSI assimilates the rain rate product superobs. It rejects many rain rate superobs in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 15% of the total number of rain rate superobs dumped are assimilated.

- These are “data of opportunity”, meaning they may not always be available, and they may stop being produced at some point in the future.
 

012.137 (dump mnemonics qksca1 and qksca2): Scatterometer data from the quikSCAT polar orbiting satellite

Each report contains 4 unique surface wind vectors, plus ancillary data.

- The 6-hour time window dump is split into two parts: qksca1 covers the first 3 hours and qksca2 covers the last three hours. The total number of reports dumped consists of the sum of these two dump counts.

- In the dump process, a program called WAVE_DCODQUIKSCAT runs in order to quality control and then superob all products onto 0.25 degree latitude/longitude grid boxes. The quality control selects the single “best” of the four wind vectors in a dumped report if possible. It also rejects all reports over land or having a high probability of rain indicator. Only about 27% of the reports dumped pass the quality control checks and are available for superobing. The number of superobed reports coming out of WAVE_DCODQUIKSCAT is listed further down in the status file. [See the number after

- The GFS-SSI assimilates 100% of the oceanic surface wind vector superobs dumped.
 

012.002 (dump mnemonic ssmip): SSM/I operational FNMOC products from the DMSP-13, DMSP-14, and DMSP-15 polar orbiting satellites

Each report is a scan consisting of up to 64 retrievals of the following set of products: surface tag, oceanic cloud water, rate rate, oceanic surface wind speed, soil moisture, sea ice concentration, sea ice age, sea ice edge, land snow edge, oceanic total water vapor (total precipitable water), land surface temperature, sea-surface temperature (over water), snow depth, rain flag, and calculated surface type.

- In the dump process, a program called PREPOBS_PREPSSMI runs.

- It first performs quality control on the scans, and accepts scans only from DMSP-13 and DMSP-15 (DMSP-14 is not designated as operational by FNMOC). About 66% of the scans remain after these checks.

- It next unpacks the rain rate product out of the scans, performing additional quality control checks. The average number of rain rate retrievals unpacked out of a scan passing the quality control checks above is 56. (Note the maximum is 64 but conditions do not always allow for a rain rate retrieval to be generated.) 

- Finally, it generates superobs of rain rate on 1 degree latitude/longitude grid boxes. The number of superobed reports coming out of PREPOBS_PREPSSMI is listed further down in the status file. (See the number after

- The GFS-SSI assimilates the rain rate product superobs. It rejects many rain rate superobs in quality control checks. A good estimate is that about 20% of the total number of rain rate superobs dumped are assimilated.
 

012.001 (dump mnemonic ssmit): SSM/I FNMOC processed radiances from the DMSP-13, DMSP-14, and DMSP-15 polar orbiting satellites

Each report is a scan consisting of up to 64 sets of brightness temperatures for 7 channels, plus other ancillary data. 

- When these brightness temperatures are ingested into the BUFR tank database, they are also passed into the NCEP Neural Net 3 algorithm in order to generate certain products which are then packed into scans and stored into another tank in the BUFR database. Although the brightness temperatures themselves are not assimilated by the GFS-SSI analysis, the Neural Net 3 oceanic surface wind speed product generated from them is assimilated. This data type is listed next.
 

012.103 (dump mnemonic ssmipn): SSM/I NCEP Neural Net 3 products from the DMSP-13, DMSP-14, and DMSP-15 polar orbiting satellites

Each report is a scan consisting of up to 64 retrievals of the following set of products: surface tag, oceanic cloud water, oceanic surface wind speed, oceanic total water vapor (total precipitable water), and sea-surface temperature. These products are generated at NCEP, from the SSM/I brightness temperatures listed previously. 

- In the dump process, a program called PREPOBS_PREPSSMI runs.

- It first performs quality control on the scans, and accepts scans only from DMSP-13 and DMSP-15 (DMSP-14 is not designated as operational by FNMOC). About 66% of the scans remain after these checks.

- It next unpacks the oceanic wind speed and total precipitable water products out of the scans, performing additional quality control checks. The average number of both wind speed and total precipitable water retrievals unpacked out of a scan passing the quality control checks above is 30. [Note the maximum is 64 but conditions (e.g., rain contamination) do not always allow for a rain rate retrieval to be generated.] 

- Finally, it generates superobs of both oceanic surface wind speed and total precipitable water on 1 degree latitude/longitude grid boxes. The number of combined wind speed and total precipitable water superobs coming out of PREPOBS_PREPSSMI is listed further down in the status file. (See the number after
