A 4D-Var Strategy
Incremental 4D-Var as a 4-dimensional
covariance model

Abstract:
The Met Office's VAR project was planned to allow its incremental 3D-Var to be
developed into 4D-Var using a simplified Perturbation Forecast (PF) model. This
strategy is justified but going back to the theoretical basis of 4D-Var for nonlinear
models, and deriving the 4D-Var equations in a new way which shows the PF model
is just part of a 4-dimensional covariance model. The Met Office's plans for
developing and implementing 4D-Var are outlined.
