TReC Target Area Selection conference - Confirmation of actions Conference time: 200311291600 ============================================================================== Case Identifier: trec_023 verification region: Southern Europe sub region: centre 45N 9E verification time: 2003120312 (Wednesday) observation time: 2003113018 (Sunday) priority: high Sensitive area calculations from Met Office, ECMWF, NCEP. Summary: Todays calculations agree with those of yesterday. No reason to change requests. Selected target area: (25-45N,5-35W) and (45-65N,15-65W) Request for obs: 24-hour confirmation for radiosonde stations in above areas 24-hour confirmation for ASAP ships in above areas (AMDAR already on for 45-65N,10-60W) 24-hour confirmation for GOES rapid scan winds centred 45N30W 24-hour confirmation for G-IV flight from St Johns. No word yet from ATC, but may have to fly shorter track. Alternatives to consider: i). to 59N37W then 59N52W ii). to 58N35W then 58N52W ============================================================================== Case Identifier: trec_023 verification region: Southern Europe sub region: centre 45N 9E verification time: 2003120312 (Wednesday) observation time: 2003120118 (Monday) priority: high Sensitive area calculations from Met Office, ECMWF (no Hessian SVs available), Meteo-France, NCEP. (Same verification time and area as above, but observations on Monday 1st Dec.) Summary: ECMWF and Meteo-France dry TE SVs have main sensitivity S Spain to N Africa. Moist TE SVs extend further N. Met Office sensitive area from N Spain/Portugal to W of Ireland, to 15W. From signal variance evolution the South of this area and S past Gibraltar is the area from which sensitivity evolves into verification region, consistent with SV results. NCEP combined has additional sensitivity around 60N30W at 12 UTC, but much lessened by 0 UTC on 1st (the signal variance from 60N30W 12UT does not grow into verif region). Main sensitivities convered by box 30-50N,15W-5E, though expect main sensitivity S of 45N. Selected target area: 30-50N,15W-5E Request for obs: 48-hour warning for radiosonde stations in above area 48-hour warning for GOES rapid scan winds over above area ============================================================================== Case Identifier: trec_023 verification region: Southern Europe sub region: centre 45N 9E verification time: 2003120412 (Thursday) observation time: 2003120118 (Monday) priority: high Sensitive area calculations from Met Office, ECMWF, NCEP. (Same verification area as above, but observations on Monday 1st Dec., verif on Thursday 4th Dec) Summary: Main Met Office area Spain to Ireland as for calculations verifying on Wednesday. From signal variance evolution, main signal through verification region comes from area near coast of Portugal and this has main impact on Wednesday, little remaining impact on Thursday. Area over E Canada probably spurious; NCEP combined supports this - main signal is nr Europe. No specific requests for this. Already covered by above request for Monday observations. ============================================================================== Conference chaired by: David Richardson Participants: Steve Randall (Met Office), Bruce Truscott (EUCOS), Jean Ruffie (Meteo France), Zoltan Toth (NCEP), Mel Shapiro (NOAA) ============================================================================== Next conference: 20031130 0900 UTC ************************************************** Note: pm conference at usual time of 16:00 UTC Sun 30th November ************************************************** ==============================================================================
