Zonal surface stress
Glenn H. White
This page presents a monthly mean climatology of zonal surface stress based on COADS data and calculated by da Silva et al. (1994). The climatology is averaged over 1979-93. COADS data are ship reports; they are most abundant between 20N and 60N. Comparisons of COADS and reanalysis flux estimates suggest that a COADS-based climatology may have some value in the tropics and in the Southern Hemisphere north of 40S. Also included in each plot is the satandard deviation of monthly mean zonal surface stress over the 15 months.
